Feed the birds, tuppence a bag”. We’ve come a long way since that Mary Poppins song, in that the local avian population would never stoop so low as to eat off the streets (well, apart from the gammy legged pigeons and seagulls). Now they want fancy feeding stations, mealworms, fat balls from Waitrose and fresh water for their hydrothera­py sessions. Do as they say, or you might not have a sniff of a spuggy in your garden for weeks. n
