White Australia: Exquisite Clare Valley Riesling 2016 A brilliant value riesling from the classic Australian region for the grape, Clare Valley north of Adelaide. Loved its lime and tangerine flavours, its zesty freshness, the price and moderate alcohol level too. A silver medal winner at the IWC competition; made by Wakefield Wines for Aldi.

£6.99, Aldi Greece: Moschofilero Mantinia Nassiakos 2016 Semeli A wonderful, dry, unoaked white from Zevgolatio in the eastern Peloponnese which scored highly in our Greek tasting recently. Moschofilero is an aromatic grape with a floral rose-garden bouquet which makes particularly crisp minerally whites grown at high altitude on Mantinia plateau. Fresh with moderate alcohol.

£9.95, The Wine Society France: Tesco Finest St Mont 2016 If you normally drink sauvignon blanc, give this great value screw-topped Gascon blend a try. It has floral and tropical fruit notes with a crisp, clean palate. Made from three little known south western French grapes, mainly gros manseng – an enchanting grape also found in Jurançon – alongside small amounts of petit courbu and arrufiac.

£6, Tesco Portugal: Quinta das Maias Branco 2016 The most popular white at our recent Iberian tasting, this unoaked blend of two Portuguese grapes, malvasia fina and encruzado, is smooth, creamy and rounded with enough zip on the palate to keep it fresh. Grapes are grown at 600 metre altitude in the Portuguese mountains, Serra de Estrela, in Dao region, an area better known for reds. Its pretty label illustrates the weaver’s broom plant which blossoms in May – hence the name ‘Maias’. £9.95, Drinkmonger, Edinburgh & Pitlochry

Red Australia: Winemaker’s Selection Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 If you love vivid cassis and blackcurrant aromas, plummy sweetness and woody undertones, snap up this Lidl bargain from Coonawarra in South Australia.

£6.99, Lidl France: Coteaux du Pont du Gard 2016 Caves d’estezargues A brilliant, soft, herby bargain blend of equal amounts of grenache and syrah made 20km west of Avignon. Made by one of Rhône’s best co-operatives, Caves d’estezargues, using natural yeast, no fining, no filtering – and organic grapes.

£9.50, Oddbins Italy: Ciro Rosso Gaglioppo 2014 Incredible value southern Italian red from a revived local grape. Hints of rose petal, rich in ripe berried fruits, sweet balsamic character with a smooth velvety palate and a little grip. Produced from organically-grown grapes on Santa Venere’s mixed farm in Calabria. The wonderful gaglioppo grape reminds me of nebbiolo with floral hints and a touch of leather, but is more approachable and enticing in its youth.

£8.75, The Wine Society Australia: Parker Coonawarra Estate Favourite Son Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 One of Waitrose’s best value reds, from Parker Estate at the southern end of Coonawarra, this cabernet would suit those who like their reds with lipsmacking cassis fruits, rich dark chocolate and a distinctly minty edge. This big, buxom red has plenty of tannins and an alcoholic kick to the finish – serve with rich red meats.

£7.49, Waitrose Italy: Vanita Negroamaro 2016 If you normally drink primitivo from Puglia, try the region’s other important red grape which grows widely in Salento – negroamaro. This is sweet, succulent and smooth with a distinctly spicy edge packaged in a very classy looking bottle from the Co-op.

£7.49, Co-op Spain: Vina Zorzal Graciano 2014 Antonio Sanz A very popular bargain in our Spanish tasting – this gutsy navarra red really delivers well above its price tag. Typically graciano with its dense colour, intense black fruits, mulberry scents and plummy fruits.

£7.50, The Wine Society Portugal: Monte Das Promessas 2014 Casa Santos Lima A clever blend of Portuguese and French grapes: touriga nacional, syrah, petit verdot and alicante bouschet. Loved its mulberry and damson aromas, spicy soft rounded generously fruity palate with plummy undertones and poised silky finish. A great value find made by the award winning winemaker who also makes the popular Bons Ventos. Based in Lisbon, he has headed east to Alentejo for these grapes.

£8.50, Oddbins Chile: De Martino Legado Carmenere 2014 De Martino are my current favourite Chilean winery. Focusing on organic production in their 300 hectare vineyard – this Maipo Carmenere offers an introduction to their style. Rich, dense fruits but still slick, polished, elegant – and organic to boot. ■ £8.79 reduced from £10.99 until 23 Jan at Waitrose Join Rose’s Wine & War Masterclass at the Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh on Friday 23 February, £45, www.rose murraybrown. com
