‘Maybe East Fife didn’t fancy it because it was so cold, but they certainly underestimated us’ says Brora skipper Duff

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Brora Rangers skipper Jamie Duff was delighted that his side won 1-0 at East Fife in Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie as the Highland League side may just start being respected.

The Fifers, who had never lost to a non-league side before, went the same way as Stranraer in the previous round, with Duff reckoning that the League 1 clubs did not realise that they had a fight on their hands until it was too late.

The 28-year-old said: “We believed we could win as we had caused an upset at Stranraer, but for it to actually happen again is a bit surreal.

“No-one gave us a chance. East Fife started in the same way that Stranraer did in that they thought they could turn up and stroll it.

“You would think that we would have been given a bit more respect, especially after winning in the last round. That clearly was not the case as we were well on top early on. Maybe they just did not fancy it as it was such a cold day but they did under-estimate us.” Colin Williamson’s header on 12 minutes separated the sides at half-time and the Fifers came out with a different approach. “They must have got a rocket at halftime because they played a lot better after that,” Duff explained. “Craig Thomson came on and gave us problems. We rode our luck a bit, however most of their chances came through mistakes from us.

“I am not sure if that was tiredness creeping in but we got through those heart-in-mouth moments.”

Dundee United survived a scare at Alloa before seeing off the Wasps 2-0. Jordan Kirkpatrick blazed a great chance wide for the hosts and the Tannadice men took advantage when Mark Durnan, pictured, headed in a Craig Slater corner just before the break. Emil Lyng drilled in a shot that was deflected past Neil Parry to make it 2-0 with 62 minutes gone. Alloa substitute Idris Kadded hit the bar with a fine drive before the end.

Morton striker Jai Quitongo struck five minutes from time to see off Dunfermline 2-1 at East End Park. The Greenock side took the lead on 24 minutes when Gary Oliver controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed past Lee Robinson. The Pars levelled 12 minutes into the second half when Declan Mcmanus created

With thoughts turning to a replay, Quiton go curled an 18-yard shot into the far corner of the net.

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell

has provided many memorable moments in his long career and he produced another as his side lost 4-1 at Ayr United.

With the Red Lichties trailing the fourth-round tie to Declan Mcdaid’s early top corner shot and Lawrence Shankland’s delicate finish 13 minutes into the second half, home defender David Ferguson threw Danny Denholm to the ground.

When no penalty was awarded Campbell strolled 15 yards on to the pitch to tell referee Mike Roncone what he thought of the decision before being sent to the stand. Ryan Mccord poked Arbroath back into the game but Shankland netted again before setting up Craig Moore for an injurytime fourth.
