Frontrunne­rs Raith put on the back foot by early goal

League 1 leaders Raith Rovers failed to convert one of their two games in hand over Ayr into points as they lost 1-0 at Stranraer.

The Stair Park side scored after nine minutes when Kirkcaldy goalkeeper Graeme Smith failed to gather Kyle Turner’s cross and Angus Beith turned the loose ball home from seven yards.

Raith could not muster an equaliser with manager Barry Smith saying: “We never started this game and we have to view it as a missed opportunit­y.”

Blues manager Stevie Farrell said “We have beaten the team at the top of this league and we should take confidence from that.”

There was also a defeat for the top side in League 2 as Clyde stunned Montrose 3-1

Mark Lamont curled home a third just after the hour, with Gary Fraser’s penalty providing no real consolatio­n for the Gable Endies.

Clyde boss Danny Lennon said: “The win was important but the performanc­e was more impressive.”

Montrose manager Stewart Petrie said: “It was a chance to open up a bigger gap but we never got going.”
