Cars found after 15 years inside ‘robot car park’

- By JAMES DELANEY

Eight vehicles stuck in a disused robotic car park in Edinburgh for more than a decade are set to be preserved after work to redevelop the building got under way.

The £5 million Autosafe “Skypark”, located on Morrison Street, was Britain’s “most technologically advanced car park” when it opened in 2001, but the company that operated it went into receivership in 2003. It is hoped the cars – which are thought to include models such as the Austin Maestro and Fiat Uno – will be given a reprieve from the scrap heap.

The £5 million Autosafe “Skypark”, on Edinburgh’s Morrison Street, was Britain’s “most technologically advanced car park” when it opened in 2001, but it was short-lived after the operator went into receivership in 2003.

It was rumoured that administrators had arrived one day to lock the doors, leaving dozens of cars trapped inside.

Pictures snapped from a building opposite show a “time capsule” containing vehicles from the late 1990s. It’s hoped the cars will be saved from the scrapheap.
