Once bitten
Lesley Riddoch claims the Kingsway in Dundee to be one of the first British dual carriageways (Perspective, 22 January).
Another Dundonian first was the bed bug infestation of one of its trams in 1947. Living in the wooden-framed seats, their blood-sucking probosces penetrated passengers’ calves. Trousers were protective, so only women were bitten.
A Dundee dermatologist diagnosed the problem, and DDT and a carpenter demolished the bugs’ dwellings. Nobody sued and there was no call for a public inquiry!
