Kyle Edmund is the toast of Yorkshire for his startling displays in the Australian Open, but the 23-year-old’s family hail from further afield.

He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the homeland of his mother, Denise. His father, Steven, is from Wales, but was raised in Zimbabwe, and later moved to South Africa. When Edmund was three, his parents decided to move to the UK for work, settling in the village of Tickton, near Beverley in Yorkshire.

As a youngster, it was not clear he had a natural aptitude for tennis. His favoured sport was cricket, and it was not until he was ten that he swapped the bat for a racquet.

It did not take long for those around him to realise his gift. At 13, he was offered a place at a tennis academy at Bisham Abbey in Buckinghamshire. Four years later, he moved to the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Training Centre in Roehampton.

Edmund was part of the GB squad that famously won the Davis Cup in 2015. He continued to make impressive strides in 2017, reaching the third round of the US and French Opens and the second round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Nowadays, Edmund lives in the Bahamas. Although his success at the Australian Open has propelled him into the limelight, he has already racked up career earnings of £1.5m and has a multimillion pound sponsorship deal with Nike.
