Tories ‘couldn’t deliver Saturday night takeaway’ says Labour

Scottish Conservative MPS were last night accused of “undermining” the devolution settlement by failing to support Labour’s amendments to key Brexit legislation.

Scottish Labour’s Brexit spokesman Neil Findlay said the party “couldn’t deliver a Friday night takeaway” never mind the necessary changes to the EU Withdrawal Bill.

Speaking during a debate at Holyrood, Mr Findlay said the Tories had “failed miserably” to deliver on a promise to amend the Bill’s problematic clause 11 in the Commons, with the changes now expect- ed to emerge in the Lords. As it stands, clause 11 would see EU powers in devolved areas repatriated to Westminster.

On the failure of Scottish Tory MP’S to back proposed Labour amendments in the Commons last week, he said: “Scottish Tory MPS rather than vote to support the position of their Scottish leader instead voted to humiliate her.

“They voted to hand the power over this important clause to an un-elected, undemocratic body rather than support Labour’s amendment.

“They folded like a pack of cards when a little pressure was applied, rather than work to protect the integrity of the devolution settlement , they voted to undermine that settlement.”

He added: “What this is that episode has shown, is that Ruth Davidson, despite her all her tank-driving, buffalo riding photo opportunities so loved by her diminishing band of Tory loyalists and despite her chummy chats with the Prime Minister at election time has no influence and no say on what happens during the Brexit process.”

Tory MSP Murdo Fraser said: “The Scottish Conservatives are disappointed that the necessary amendments to clause 11 could not be made in the Commons and we are determined to see these rectified in the Lords.”
