Bold Girls

- Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow, until 10 February, 0141-429 0022 Joyce Mcmillan

With Derry Girls emerging as a smash-hit television comedy, and the Irish border in the news, the story of women’s lives during the Troubles suddenly seems like a hot topic; but it was back in 1990 that David Hayman of 7:84 commissioned young playwright Rona Munro to write Bold Girls, above, a play about four women living without their lost or imprisoned menfolk in 1980s West Belfast. Now, the Citizens’ revives what has become a muchstudied classic of Scottish theatre; and Richard Baron of Firebrand and Pitlochry directs River City star Deirdre Davis, alongside the fabulous Lucianne Mcevoy, in one of the most timely revivals of the year.
