Edinburgh and Glasgow to clash in cup decider on BT finals day

-

The final of the 1872 Cup between Edinburgh and Glasgow will be played on BT finals day, the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) have announced.

Unlike previous seasons, the 1872 Cup is to be contested over three matches rather than two, with the final leg to be played at BT Murrayfield on Saturday, 28 April. The series is level at 1-1 after Edinburgh won the first leg at Murrayfield before Warriors took the second at Scotstoun.

The SRU are branding the event as Silver Saturday and a total of seven trophies will be contested. The men’s and women’s BT Cup finals will be played as normal in the afternoon of cup finals day, with the final Guinness Pro14 match of the season and 1872 Cup decider between Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors to follow.

Supporters will able to purchase a single ticket to see every game at BT Murrayfield and clubs who reach respective finals will continue to retain a proportion of the ticket sales to their matches as in previous years.

On the day, the women’s BT Bowl and BT Shield finals will be contested, along with the men’s BT Bowl and the men’s BT Shield.

The Sarah Beaney Cup, played by the finalists in the women’s Cup competition will feature alongside the Men’s BT Cup final, ahead of the 1872 decider which kicks off at 7:30pm.

SRU president Rob Flockhart said: “The inclusion of the 1872 Cup decider between Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors adds an exciting new dimension to an already full day of must-win rugby.”

Scotland defeated Canada 52-5 on the first day of the men’s tournament at the Sydney Sevens yesterday.

The other match to be played in Pool D resulted in a 26-19 victory by Australia over USA.
