Pensioner seriously hurt in car collision

A pensioner is in a critical condition after she was hit by a car.

The 79-year-old woman was crossing Carfin Street near Bracken Street, New Stevenston, when she was struck by a Volkswagen Golf on Saturday. The injured woman was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, then transferre­d to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Police said she is being treated for lower body injuries and a head injury.

Hospital staff describe her condition as critical. The 58-year-old male driver of the VW Golf was uninjured.
