British values?

-

The chief inspector of the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted), Amanda Spielman, addressing an Anglican education conference, trotted out those two old nags “British values” and“equalities legislation” to suggest that the Christian community should practise its faith in private only.

Apparently her “muscular liberalism... holds no truck for ideologies that want to close minds or narrow opportunity”.

Does she not realise that she is herself doing precisely what she condemns? She wants us all to think alike, to endorse her ideology and to keep quiet if we disagree. “British values” have yet to be defined and “equalities legislation” might be better called “uniformity legislation” in the way she views it.

Let’s hope Ofsted’s inspectors are more realistic – and more truly liberal – than their chief.
