Charity funeral director loses frills

- By ANGUS HOWARTH

Britain’s first not-for-profit funeral director has been launched in Edinburgh.

Caledonia Cremation will offer direct cremations for a fixed price of £995.

A direct cremation is a simple funeral with no service at the crematorium. The family or loved ones can still decide whether they want the ashes scattered or returned to them.

The average cost of a cremation in Edinburgh last year was £3,144, while the national average was £1,680. Caledonia Cremation is owned by Scottishanti-povertycharitycommunity Renewal Trust.

The charity said any profits would be reinvested into projects to help Scotland’s poorest communities struggling to cope with bereavement. Social Investment Scotland have supported the launch.

Caledonia Cremation founder Paul Mccolgan said: “Borrowing thousands of pounds to cover a funeral is now com- mon practice in Edinburgh. Our vision is for a Scotland where everyone can afford a dignified funeral personal to their needs.

“At Caledonia Cremation to keep costs lower, we don’t have a fleet of hearses and limousines. These days there is no need for top hats or canes.

“We are simply committed to offering one cost and never to upsell. We offer the same dignified service to every single person. Equal for everyone, it is not a question of rich or poor.”
