Shorthorns on the up at Stirling
At yesterday’s Stirling bull sales, the resurgence in the Shorthorn breed continued, with the breed seeing two bulls through the ring with a 20,000gns price tag.
The first sale-topper came from the dispersal sale of Douglas Mcmillan’s Luncarty-based Coldrochie herd. The rising five year-old bull was repurchased by its original breeder, John Scott, Fearn Farm, Ross-shire, who had sold it to Mcmillan for 10,000gns in 2015.
Equalling this top price in the main sale was a 22-month-old bull from Jack Ramsay’s Millerston herd from Mauchline in Ayrshire which went to L Townsend, Coxhill Farm, Moffat.
Atotal of 59 bulls sold in the breed to average £5,803 which, although back £100 on last February’s sale, still stood £1,500 above the 2016 sale average.
Top price of the day in the Aberdeen Angus ring was 15,000gns for a 22-monthold bull from the Campbells of Thrunton, Alnwick, which sold to G Fraser, Newton of Idvies, Forfar.
The breed’s second-top price was 14,000gns from the Ellin herd of Wanda Hobbs, Wedderlie, Gordon, selling to WS Robson, Yatesfield, Otterburn.
The Stouphill herd of WD Allen, Humblehaugh, Alnwick, topped at 12,000gns, for a bull to A G Houston, Gretna Green, Dumfriesshire.
With a further seven bulls selling to five-figure sums, the breed average stood at £5,746 for 101 bulls sold, a figure which was £101 up on the year.
