Football for free for young bookworms

- By LUCINDA CAMERON

Children are being offered a free football match ticket if they read four books through a scheme that aims to encourage reading.

Fourteen SPFL clubs and almost 250 libraries are participating in the pilot project, which is open to children aged five to 12 as part of an initial three-month campaign.

Clubs and libraries will issue a reading challenge card to children who want to take part. The child will receive a stamp on their card for every book they read.

Participants will receive a free match ticket once they have read four books. An accompanying adult will be able to purchase a discounted ticket. Scottish Book Trust chief executive Marc Lambert said reading could increase empathy and reduce stress.
