Accession hailed: Troops pay tribute to the Queen with 21-gun salute
Gunners from 105 Regiment Royal Artillery, fire a 21-gun Royal Salute at Edinburgh Castle at 12 noon yesterday to commemorate the accession to the throne of Her Majesty The Queen.
Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne on 6 February, 1952, and was crowned on 2 June, 1953.
As she does most years, the Queen is reflecting on the anniversary of her father’s death in private at Sandringham, where she has been staying for her annual winter break.
George VI died in his sleep at Sandringham House after suffering from lung cancer.
