Some of Scotland’s most popular independent street food traders have announced a brand new food market for the newly-refurbished Argyle Street Arches in Glasgow.

The venture will be part of a new wave of exciting street food markets that have popped up across the city, joining the already established Dockyard Social in the west end and The Scotsman Awards Best Street Food winning Big Feed in the southside. Dubbed Platform, the new market will launch at 11am on 16 February in adjoining arches under the city’s Central Station.

The organisers say the new venue will offer a “fiercely independent alternative” in a city “saturated with fast food and chain restaurants”, with all of the traders adhering to the Scotland’s Food Charter for Events, meaning all of the produce used will be locally and sustainably sourced, seasonal, free range and fair trade.

Food will be available from 11am until 10pm every Friday and Saturday, with everything either sit-in or to grab and go. Family and dog friendly, the project will also see purveyors offering children’s portions at a reduced price, with menus updated regularly as seasonal produce changes.

Established vendors on the Scottish street food scene such as pan-asian specialists Ginger & Chilli and the winners of the Scottish Street Food People’s Choice Award 2017, Shrimpwreck will join Chick + Pea and Glasgow favourites Babu Bombay Street Kitchen, who mix family recipes and home-style cooking with an Indianscottish twist.

Edinburgh’s The Rosehip, London’s Borough Market veterans Freddy & Hicks and newcomers The Sunshine Tea Lounge and Mimi’s Takoyaki complete the line up. Those looking to enjoy something a little sweeter will have their cravings satisfied by Chunk’s Ice Cream’s homemade waffles and the award winning creme brulee on offer at The Crema Caravan.

One of Scotland’s longest established coffee businesses, Thomson’s Coffee Roasters, will take up residence in the Cafe Bar, where customers can get freshly roasted coffee and the resident baker will provide a range of breads, pastries and cakes.

Rachna Dheer of Babu Bombay Street Kitchen said: “Babu Bombay Street Kitchen is really excited to bring our food to new weekly independent food market Platform.”
