Not so bright eyes

-

Over recent months, driving around central Scotland, I’ve become aware of an additional hazard facing drivers. Apart from potholes and the like, the poor level of road maintenance is also having an impact on the functioning of cat’s eyes!

On many roads, where no resurfacing work has been carried out for years, the absence of maintenance of these important night-time safety devices – perhaps due to accumulated debris or the devices sinking lower into the road surface – means they are ineffective on long stretches of road.

Having driven at night in other countries where cat’s eyes are not installed, I’ve always been glad that the UK has them. Now, it seems, cat’s eyes here have gone to the dogs! Night-time driving has become more hazardous.
