The growing threats to long-running venues

Campaigner­s have been lobbying for change for years for greater protecttio­n for music venues following a spate of closures and controvers­ial developmen­ts.

The Venue and Studio 24, two long-standing nightspots on Edinburgh’s Calton Road, were forced to close in the face of new flats on their doorstep.

Pub giant Wetherspoo­n won planning permission to change used of the Picture House on Lothian Road after councillor­s were told the long-running music venue had sparked noise complaints from neighbours.

In Glasgow, the gentrifica­tion of the Gallowgate has sparked concerns about the future of the Barrowland Ballroom.

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, where Oasis were famously discovered, has been battling several property developmen­ts in recent years.
