Concert marred

-

Generation Snowflake was in full cry (literally) on Saturday when Morrissey, performing at the glasgow se cc, asked the audience: “I’m curious, do you actually like Nicola Sturgeon? Those hands would be in anybody’s pocket.” Cue reflex boos and walk-outs from some of the little preciouses that had paid £56.20-£73.80 for the privilege of storming out in the huff at his suggestion that Scotland’s First Minister is not his cup of Earl Grey.

Over the decades I’ve witnessed Bob Geldof, Mike Scott, Andrew Eldritch, Terry Hall, Ian Mcculloch, Aurelio Voltaire and the inimitable Jaz Coleman wax lyrical regarding some issue particular to where they were performing. Good stagecraft demands demonstrating to the audience a local interest. Indeed, Coleman’s formidable knowledge base suggests a career in TV’S The Chase beckons if he retires from music.

Sometimes what was said didn’t go down well, but agreeing to disagree is part of a mature, civilised society. Considering Morrissey has long proven more opinionated than most, perhaps the real problem is society’s increasing intolerance to anyone having opinions outside of the approved hive minds?
