Buchan misses out on place in final

- By PIPPA FIELD

There were mixed emotions for freestyle skier Murray Buchan as he laid down a career-best Olympic performance but still came away disappointed.

The three-time British halfpipe champion was 17th on his Olympic Games debut in Sochi four years ago and improved that by three places in Pyeongchang.

He landed his first run to score 66.00 and sit ninth but, the last man to drop on the second run, watched as others bettered his score.

Buchan needed to find another 2.60 to move up into the top 12 and secure his place in the final. However, it did not arrive as the judges awarded him 65.40 and he had to be content with staying in 14th, albeit as the highest British finisher.

“I’m really pleased to land both my runs although I’m disappointed to be so close,” he said.

“I feel like my chance to make the final is gone, you never know when you’re going to get another shot so it’s disappointing.

“But I really hoped that I was going to land one of my runs with both doubles in it and I did it twice so I’m really happy with that.”

While Buchan may not have reached the final, there was female representation from Rowan Cheshire who was seventh while earlier in the Games, 19-year-old freestyle skier Izzy Atkin secured Britain’s first-ever Olympic medal on skis with bronze in the slopestyle. l Can Team GB hit their five medal target?
