#BRITS

Downing Street released a statement defending Prime Minister Theresa May after rapper Stormzy criticised her handling of the Grenfell Tower fire at the BRIT Awards. @Dionnegrant reported: “Downing Street has said Theresa May is ‘absolutely committed’ to #Grenfell after Stormzy called her out at the #BRITS.” @Roisin_oconnor was sceptical: “Won’t believe her until she actually makes something happen. Still – less than 24 hours after Stormzy’s Brits freestyle. Never try to tell us music doesn’t have the power to affect change.” @Angstromhoot joked: “Enjoying the image of 10 Downing St calling an emergency meeting to work out how to respond to Stormzy.”

#TRUMP

Donald Trump made a case for arming ‘adept trained teachers’ with guns in wake of Florida school shooting. @realdonaldtrump tweeted: “History shows that a school shooting lasts, on average, 3 minutes. It takes police & first responders approximately 5 to 8 minutes to get to site of crime. Highly trained, gun adept, teachers/coaches would solve the problem instantly, before police arrive. GREAT DETERRENT!” @jamesrbuk responded: “As ever, Donald Trump hasn’t waited to look at the evidence, or hear from experts, or even from teachers and police: he’s imagined a solution in his head and decided it’s the obvious fix.” @Adamserwer said: “This seems obvious but: even if you pass a bill to arm teachers the shooter will just shoot the teacher first.” @johncardillo applauded the President: “Exactly! Finally, a common sense @ POTUS using facts and data rather than emotion to solve problems.”

#LECTURESTRIKE

Lecturers belonging to the University and College Union began a strike on Thursday over changes to pensions. The strike could last two weeks and affect a million students @gandalfsugarnut tweeted: “Some of my uni lecturers are going on strike today but I support them, no one deserves to have their pension cut.” @ambermatthewson Said: “Love how uni lecturers go on strike for 4 weeks+ but I’m somehow meant to maintain a 2:1/First.”
