Meet the heads
We put the people who lead Scotland’s independent schools in the spotlight to find out what makes them tick
What has made you proudest in the past 12 months?
There isn’t one single moment. Children constantly surprise you – I think there are great moments every day in a school. It is one of the great reasons to be involved in education – it is constantly rewarding.
What is your favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
Relaxing with family – I never take work home so the weekend is all family time. I think it’s really easy for people in positions of authority to get sucked into a cycle of work, work, work. I value balance in life and it’s something I try to instil in my teaching staff too; overworked and overstressed teachers result in overworked and overstressed pupils. That’s no way to educate. Rod Grant, 53, who qualified as a primary teacher, is married with a son, ten, and three grown-up stepchildren.
