Like many leading ladies of her generation, she used one name on-screen and was known for her comic timing and dancing skills.
Sridevi was judged a great asset in the songand-dance melodramas that are a staple of mainstream Indian cinema.
She died on Saturday in Dubai, her brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor confirmed. She had been in the city to attend a wedding in her extended family.
Indian political leaders and entertainers posted condolences and recollections of her work.
