Springboks appoint Erasmus as new coach

dirt, andallthosesortsofthings, it incites certain behaviours and are they the sorts of behaviours that we want to see?”

The Scottish Rugby Union offered strong condemnation upon seeing the footage which has been widely circulated on social media.

“Scottish Rugby is appalled by the verbal abuse suffered by Eddie Jones,” a statement read. “The disgusting behaviour of those involved does not represent the values of our sport or its fans. The dignity Eddie and the England team showed on Saturday is in stark contrast to this ugly incident.”

Jones has resolved not to use public transport again following the experience.

“I’m a human being. I don’t consider myself any different from anyone else, so for me to travel on public transport I thought was OK. But I’ll make sure I won’t in future. It’s as simple as that,” Jones said.

“I can’t because it was shown on Sunday what happens when I do. That’s the world we live in. I was massively surprised. It wasn’t comfortable.

“I never knock back a request for a selfie unless I’m racing to somewhere. So I try and do the right thing by the fans, but if this happens then you’ve got to have a look at your own safety.”

When asked whether the abuse was physical or verbal, Jones replied: “A bit of both.” Rassie Erasmus has been named as the new South Africa coach.

Erasmus, the former Munster rugby director, who played in 36 Tests for the Springboks, succeeds Allister Coetzee.

Coetzee was dismissed last month following a run of poor results and 45-yearold Erasmus will combine coaching duties with his role as SA Rugby’s director of rugby.

Erasmus will head up the Springboks’ management team until the end of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, SA Rugby announced.

“The Springbok team is our flagship brand, and the on-field performances have a direct impact on the business of SA Rugby,” chief executive Jurie Roux said. “Following a very detailed review process of the 2017 season, I believe that we have managed to assemble a strong and experienced Springbok coaching and management staff.”

Erasmus’ first Test at the helm will be against Wales in Washington DC on 2 June, which is followed by a threetest home series against England.

“It is a huge task to coach the Springboks, and I am very privileged,” Erasmus said. “I really believe we have the players and the rugby IP (intellectual property) to turn things around and to mount a serious challenge at next year’s Rugby World Cup.”
