Rachel Nickell: The Untold Story

-

Rachel Nickell’s murder in front of her infant son on Wimbledon Common in July 1992 horrified and gripped the nation.

Under enormous pressure to find the killer, the Met turned to a criminal profiler and eventually sent an undercover female officer to fake romantic interest in prime suspect Colin Stagg in the hope of eliciting a confession from him.

The subsequent trial collapsed and it was years before serial rapist Robert Napper was convicted of the murder. Now Fiona Bruce is revisiting the case, speaking to some of the key figures involved, including Stagg himself. Also contributing are: Sir Harry Ognall, the former High Court Judge whose ruling at the Old Bailey in September 1994 set Stagg free; Roy Ramm, who was in charge of the specialist undercover unit that supplied the officer for the covert police operation against their prime suspect and William Clegg QC, who defended both Stagg when he was acquitted and Napper during his trial for the murders of mother and daughter Samantha and Jazmine Bisset in 1993.
