Road rage

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf says it is unacceptable for employers to try and dock the wages of workers who could not travel during last week’s red weather warning. For non-attendance, regardless of the reasons, an employer can legally withhold wages. While many large companies will probably suck up the cost there are many small businesses who will be unable to pay people as they will have had no income during the snow problems.

Gary Saddler What about the people who couldn’t go to work because the business was closed? Should they lose wages?

Lynn Nicoll I wonder if he’ll mind footing the bill? He says he doesn’t know the legal position but then punts out a flippant comment. He also says lessons will be learned from the problems on the M80. Really, as Transport Minister doesn’t he realise that these are the same problems that happen every time there is a heavy snowfall? This minister should resign as he clearly doesn’t have a clue.

Sean Bain Now I’ve heard everything! The worst snowfall; the first ever red alert in Scotland; and it’s the SNP’S fault! Funny how there is no praise for the Transport Minister for the rest of the main trunk network being open. A red warning means no travel unless absolutely vital. So what we’re all those cars and non-essential vehicles doing on the M80 and elsewhere?

David Howie This minister, Police Scotland and other emergency services issued warnings for all motorists not to drive unless absolutely necessary. Cars were getting stuck in the snow and lorries were jackknifed across the carriageways – all stopping the snow ploughs and gritters getting through. I watched a live video of the M80 and it was carnage.

Margaret Paterson So do the people that made it to work get extra money or days in lieu? Of course not. If you’re not at work then you shouldn’t be paid unless your place of work is closed.

David Richardson Who in their right minds would oppose sanctioning management who send employees out into a red warning Arctic storm, against specific Police Scotland and weather report advice? Employers should not have been telling their staff to travel to work in that weather and no employee should be paid less as a result of the weather stopping them from getting to work. It’s about protecting workers rights.

Euan C Purchase I worked all my life and only got paid when I attended, as it should be for all.

Den Lowe He doesn’t live in the real world. If you don’t make money you can’t pay money, it’s as cold and simple as that – unless of course it’s the Government in which case you can throw taxpayers’ money at it. Don’t see how it will dent the economy. What you don’t buy this week you will buy next week. Also, places like our local pub have been busier this
