Wilson leads his team into world semis

- By MIKE HAGGERTY

Ross Wilson’s Scotland rink became the first men’s team to qualify for the weekend play-offs at the World Junior Curling Championships in Aberdeen when they beat Switzerland 10-5 yesterday.

The win maintained their unbeaten record and will ensure they are top seeds for the semi-finals.

The Scots dominated the Swiss from the start, scoring four in the second end with a precision hit and stay by Wilson and ending the game with another four-point score after Wilson had successfully carried out a tricky takeout.

Scotland’s women lost 10-4 to Sweden in their seventh round-robin game. Fifth player Sophie Jackson was brought in as skip, with Rebecca Morrison moving down to play third stones. But the ploy was to no avail as the Scots suffered their fourth loss.

With only three wins and two games left, the Scots’ hopes of making the semifinals are slim, with other results needing to go their way as well as beating USA and Russia.
