Scots reach seven finals at British Isles champs

- By MELVYN BECK

Scots are involved in seven of the 11 finals being played today at the British Isles indoor bowls championships in Paisley.

Paul Foster has his eyes on a double, with the Prestwick ace through to defend his singles title against the Channel Islands’ Scott Baxter. He enjoyed a comfortable 21-8 semi-final win over Ireland’s Graham Mckee yesterday.

Foster, along with Craig Lindsay, also lines up in the pairs final against England’s Lewis Baker and Nicky Brett.

A semi-final surprise looked on the cards when Foster found himself 6-0 down after just four ends, but he recovered to reel off 14 shots over the next four ends and only conceded two more singles.

East Lothian’s men’s triples and men’s senior fours both reached their finals. The men’s triple of Mark Johnston, Willie Wood, who celebrates his 80th birthday next month, and Derek Oliver, beat the Coleman clan from Ireland, Rod, Alistair and Stephen, 16-12 in the morning and then England’s Bradley Prowle, Glenn Williams and Tony Webb 23-12 in the afternoon. They face the Channel Islands in the final

Peter Fallen, David Pryde, Alan Morgan and Brian Smith had a far more comfortable passage to the men’s senior fours final as they powered past the Channel Islands’ Dave King, Norman Wood, Adrian Atkinson and Mac Timms 27-16.

Arbroath’s Jason Banks will face Wales’ Daniel Salmon in the final of the men’s junior singles after his comprehensive 21-8 defeat of England’s Jamie Barker in the semi-finals.

Blantyre’s Caroline Brown bids to retain her singles title against the Channel Islands’ Alison Merrien, while Dumbarton’s Emma Mcintyre faces England’s Katherine Rednall in the women’s junior singles final.

The one Scottish setback yesterday was the 19-14 semi-final defeat for Arbroath’s Leanne Furye and Caroline Ruxton in the women’s pairs at the hands of Ireland’s Chloe Watson and Sandra Bailie.
