A late equaliser from Craig Mcguffie at blustery Gayfield took Ayr to the top of League 1.

Arbroath keeper Ricky Gomessavedjamieadams and Michael Moffat headers early on before keeping out a Lawrence Shankland drive.

The Red Lichties worked their way into the game and Mark Whatley had a fierce effort blocked before Blair Yule’s cross just prior to the break flashed across the six-yard box with noone able to touch it in.

There was still time for a goal before half-time, when Danny Denholm blasted a low effort past Jack Ruddy from 22 yards.

Ayr looked to hit back at the start of the second half and Adams tried his luck from distance but the ball rose too much.

Andy Geggan kept his shot below the bar on 69 minutes but Gomes kept it out before Thomas O’brien just failed to increase Arbroath’s advantage shortly afterwards with a header. Gomes needed two attempts to hold on to a Declan Mcdaid effort on 76 minutes but he was beaten by Mcguffie four minutes from the end.

The substitute had only been on the park for eight minutes when he cut in from the left and curled a shot high into the net.
