Scotland found Italy’s attacking prowess too hot to handle as they fell to a 45-31 defeat in Bari and took the wooden spoon in the Under-20s Six Nations.

The Azzurri ran in seven tries to seal a bonus-point win at Stadio della Vittoria, as the young Scots ended the campaign with a disappointing defeat.

Italy raced into a 12-0 lead with tries by Albert Batista and Matteo Luccardi but Scotland responded with a score by Paddy Dewhirst on 24 minutes.

Two tries from Alessandro Forcucci put the hosts further ahead before Scotland captain Stafford Mcdowall touched down to give his side some hope. Ross Thompson added the extras as the visitors trailed 24-14 at half-time.

Logan Trotter’s converted score after the break reduced the deficit to three points but tries by Michele Lamaro, Danilo Fischetti and Alessandro Fusco put daylight between the hosts and Scotland before Dewhirst grabbed a late consolation score for the visitors
