Gentle Cancer Touch Treatments at The Balmoral

The treatment

A Catch the Breath Back and Head Treatment, £45 for 25 minutes, and a Soothe and Nurture Organic Facial, also £45 for 25 minutes at the Balmoral Spa, The Balmoral, Edinburgh.

Why go?

These therapies are both Cancer Touch Treatments, designed in partnership with the Made for Life Foundation, alongside oncologists and Macmillan Cancer Support, to be suitable for those suffering from or affected by this disease. The staff at the Balmoral Spa all underwent a cancer touch training course back in January, so they all have the skills required.

Our spy says

I don’t have cancer, but these treatments are also relevant for those who fancy something gentler than the usual massage. Perhaps you just feel a bit fragile and don’t want to be pummelled.

I’ve tried Made for Life’s gorgeous Hand on Heart Back, Face and Scalp (£110 for 85 minutes) therapy before. It’s available here, but I fancy trying the two shorter treatments back to back.

They all use the products by Made for Life Organics by Spiezia Organics, which are SO gorgeous texturally and fragrance-wise.

Before the treatment, I have a consultation with warm and friendly therapist Charmaine. I mention my sore shoulders, then remember that this isn’t a traditional massage and isn’t designed for ironing out muscles, though she kindly says she’ll use a little of their Muscle Soothing Balm to help.

Once I was lying down on the cosy bed, the back of my scalp is held and stroked, then the blanket is slowly rolled down to expose my back. Charmaine then performs Chinese tui na, which involves rhythmic stroking and pressing moves. It’s very hypnotic and ritualistic. I am lulled, nearly asleep. Towards the end of this, as promised, she smooths on a little of the rosemary and chamomile scented balm.

Next is the facial, which is more traditional, although nothing is too abrasive or stings. She uses a blob of Made for Life Organics’ Daily Radiance Facial Cleansing Balm to melt away my slap. As it’s massaged across my skin, I inhale the scent of sweet jojoba, coconut oil and calendula, among other ingredients. I am buffed by another lovely potion – the Brightening Exfoliator with chamomile stamens.

Then there’s some of the Daily Rejuvenating Face Oil, with the unusual but delicious combo of rose and vanilla. My skin is drinking it up like a milkshake. Finally, I’m anointed with lip balm and moisturiser.

The results

I feel very calm and centred – a sensation that lasts all day, even once I’ve escaped this scented cocoon and braved Princes Street. n
