Woman killed in self-driving car collision

- By NEIL LANCEFIELD

A woman has died in the US after being hit by an autonomous Uber car.

It is believed to be the first death involving a pedestrian and a self-driving vehicle on public roads.

The crash happened overnight from Sunday into yesterday in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe, Arizona. The victim was taken to hospital but died.

The car was in autonomous mode with an operator behind the wheel when the incident occurred. Uber has been testing selfdriving vehicles in Tempe and Phoenix for several months. The firm suspended its autonomous vehicle programme across the US and Canada.

Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi tweeted: “We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened.”
