It’s not hake news – Scots MP in fish-flinging protest on Thames
A legal challenge to the UK government on Brexit can proceed to a full hearing in the Scottish courts, the country’s most senior judge has ruled.
Lord Carloway, the Lord President, said a previous decision to dismiss the case had “erred” in ruling that there was “no real prospect of success”.
He has now granted permission for the challenge, which has been brought by a cross-party group of politicians from Holyrood and the European Parliament, to proceed.
Labour, Scottish Green and SNP representatives united to bring forward the legal challenge, with Green MSPS Andy Wightman and Ross Greer, SNP MEP Alyn Smith and Labour MEPS David Martin and Catherine Stihler all involved. A Scottish Conservative MP will “symbolically dump” fish into the Thames in a protest against the government’s transition deal on fishing.
A statement from the Fishing for Leave group revealed Ross Thomson will be aboard the vessel Holladays R8 as it travels up the Thames from Whistable to Westminster, arriving at 8.30am. Fellow Tory MP Jacob Rees-mogg will hold a press conference on shore.
A spokesman for the Port of London Authority said a vessel has approval to make its way up the Thames, but added that it had not been informed of a plan to dump fish. an environment Agency spokesman said the dumping of fish was “not a pollution risk”.
