The Scotsman headline: “Congestion charge bid in Glasgow considered” will make grim reading for many Scots. Politician­s, not content with raising Scottish income tax and council taxes by default, now propose to kill off tax-paying businesses dependent on vehicular traffic to the city centre unless you can afford a new car.

This may please the Green party but few others. This may well work environmen­tally, as there will be far fewer people using the centres of any city adopting this plan. The small fact that the local economy, jobs and customer goodwill will be sacrificed seems to cut no ice. Politician­s need to live in the real world. Voters do. (DR) GERALD EDWARDS
