Youth development pays off as Muir sweep to first title
BOROUGHMUIR U16 CARTHA QP U16 80 12
Boroughmuir reaped the results of setting up a rugby academy this season by sweeping to a massive victory over Cartha QP to lift the National Youth under-16 Cup at BT Murrayfield yesterday for the first time in the club’s history.
“Hopefully we can take this forward and give the teams coming up something to aim for,” said Boroughmuir’s head coach, Alan Macgregor. He added: “I really feel for the Catha boys. The scoreline did not reflect the way they played.”
Boroughmuir, who won the Shogun Conference at under-16 level, were ahead in almost every aspect of the game, their superior physical conditioning, their support play and their accurate passing allowing the champions to run in 12 tries.
Ten of those were converted by man-of-the-match, Stuart Dobson, who complemented his kicking skills with intelligent play at inside centre. Other valuable contributors were double try-scoring wing Cameron Ledingham and powerful No 8 Michael Jones.
For their part, Cartha, understrength because of injuries to key players, battled until the end and were rewarded with two tries.
