Democracy died

-

There can be no objection whatsoever to the people of the UK voting to leave the EU, but it seems a peculiarly British idiosyncrasy that we should do so on the basis of, at best, muddled propaganda or at worst, an entirely false prospectus. It does seem we are leaving the EU, “per incuriam” (characterised by lack of due regard to the law or the fact).

In the final analysis, nobody, not even Jacob Rees-mogg, had an inkling what that departure would look like – least of all our government, even at this late stage. So don’t try and tell me the 52 per cent were fully aware of what is now to be hurtling towards us in the fullness of time. Can the electorate not be trusted to make a second decision – this time with the benefit of all the facts? I guess not. That would be too much like democracy. TORQUIL MACLEOD
