Willie Wallace praises Killie striker as he closes in on Hearts and Celtic great in post-war top-flight scoring chart

The remarkable scoring exploits of Kris Boyd can reach another high today if he scores against Hamilton as he will become third on the post-war top-flight scoring charts.

The veteran Kilmarnock striker is currently tied with Joe Mcbride on 217 goals and is now targeting second-placed Willie Wallace who blasted 224 in his fabulous career.

The Lisbon Lion hopes Boyd shoots his way past him because it would be good for the modern game.

Former Celtic and Hearts star Wallace said: “I hope he does it.

“It would be a fantastic achievement. To score the amount of goals he has in the modern game is really special.

“Most clubs pay a fortune for someone who can bag ten a season, so that shows you how good Boyd has been.

“He really has been phenomenal and it’s all credit to him that he has consistently scored over such a prolonged period.

“Records are there to be broken and if he gets past me then I will be the first to congratulate him. I have to be honest and say I never thought anyone would catch up with my total, so it just underlines what a feat it will be if Kris goes on to do it.

“Of course, Ally Mccoist did it in the 1990s, so that record stood for a while and he deserved to do so.

“And you have to say that I can’t see Kris catching him. Mccoist has set a record that will never be beaten.”

Boyd’s former Kilmarnock team-mate and manager Lee Mcculloch is not so sure because he feels Boyd could play on until he is 40.

Mcculloch said: “It’s a phenomenal achievement and when you consider he has been to England, Turkey and America during his career it’s even more impressive.

“He has been at least three seasons away from Scottish football so to still reach the total he has is fantastic.

“It would have been interesting if he had stayed longer at Rangers during his first spell at the club. He could have smashed every record going.

“All credit to him for scoring 20 goals in the Kilmarnock team this season. He’s the league’s top scorer as well with 15 and usually it’s an Old Firm player that tops that chart.

“I’ve said before, Kris Boyd is worth his weight in gold and he’s proving it again.

“He’s 34 but I wouldn’t rule anything out with him.

“He’s defying all odds and he’s defying many aspects of the modern game.

“I think Kris, the way he plays, could play on until he is 38, 39 or even 40.

“Everybody goes on about how he might be a little bit heavy, but it doesn’t affect his football. He could undoubtedly play on for a number of years.”

“I would be surprised if he doesn’t win Player of the Year and I certainly hope that he does.

“It would be a refreshing change if he was to come out on top and in my opinion he should.”
