Celebration of decade of open water market

- By EMMA NEWLANDS

Scotland’s non-domestic water market is celebrating the tenth anniversary of being opened up to competition in what was the first move of its kind globally.

To coincide with this, the sector’s largest retailer Business Stream has revealed that it has saved its customers more than £160 million on their water bills in that time.

The organisation, formed in 2006 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scottish Water, has also helped them cut their environmental impact by conserving more than 24 billion litres of water.

The market opening up paved the way for all businesses and public sector organisations to choose their water supplier, and the English market followed 12 months ago.

Jo Dow, chief executive at Business Stream, said: “Our focus now is on the next decade and ensuring that we continue to evolve and enhance our services and solutions in line with our customers’ needs.”
