Ayr take the points late on to stay three clear of Raith in race for title

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Ayr United scored twice in the final 18 minutes at East Fife to turn a 2-1 defeat into a 3-2 win and keep their title chase on track.

The Honest Men got off to a terrific start when Alan Forrest slotted them into the lead after four minutes but Chris Duggan’s 25-yard shot deceived Ayr goalkeeper Jack Ruddy to level midway through the opening half.

Duggan, pictured, lobbed his side ahead early in the second half however Ayr rallied and Stevie Bell headed in a corner to equalise.

With just two minutes left Bell was held by Craig Watson at another set piece and Craig Moore cracked home from the penalty spot.

Ayr boss Ian Mccall said: “It took guts to get that win and it is a win I am very proud of as the togetherness of the players was fantastic.”

Second-placedraith Rovers also left it late before securing their 2-0 success over visitors Albion Rovers. Bobby Barr broke the deadlock four minutes from time when he shot high into the net and Dario Zanatta tapped in the second in the final minute.

Alloa came back from two goals down to defeat Arbroath 3-2 at the Indodrill Stadium and snatch third place from the Gayfield men.

Michael Mckenna flicked the visitors in front on 21 minutes and Ryan Wallace scored their second within a minute. Alloa were level at the break after Callum Smith’s header and a close range finish from Jordan Kirkpatrick who also grabbed the winner 13 minutes from the end when his shot was deflected over David Hutton.

Stranraer’s thin play-off hopes remain in place after their 2-0 Stair Park success over Forfar with Scott Agnew and Ross Lyon scoring in the first half. Bottom side Queen’s Park drew level with Albion Rovers after playing out a goalless draw with Airdrie at Hampden with the Diamonds having Chris O’neil dismissed 11 minutes from time.
