#CLARAPONSATI
The debate over the Spanish extradition request for Clara Ponsati, a Catalan politican and St Andrews economist, continued with the news that Spanish academics had criticised Scots support for her. @Broonmista said: “What nonsense. Ponsati isn’t some abused martyr. This is a legal case brought by a democracy against an individual that broke the country’s laws. Politicians should stay out of it.” @Roberthmerriman commented: “All my best to Ponsati. Sending her back to certain mistreatment and abuse in Spain would be a bad look.” @Lapgongleong offered: “A European Arrest Warrant is a European Arrest Warrant. Ponsati did nothing wrong, but she disobeyed Spain’s constitutional norms. The EU does not interfere on such issues.” @Indycyclist commented: “Even better, I like Spain. Got a lot of time for the place. Love the culture. But, I deplore the way Madrid treats Catalonia. I happily donated to Clara Ponsatì’s fundraiser and hope that she stays here. Where she’s welcome.” @Spawnofjustice commented: “Catalonia is not an oppressed underdog bravely fighting for its liberation.”
#WINNIEMANDELA
South African anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Mandela, the former wife of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, has died aged 81. @lukewaltham said: “South Africa is heartbroken again. We are in mourning. A liberation icon who has inspired and empowered so many to fight against oppression and hate.” @idriselba commented: “Rest in peace Mama Winnie. My heart is heavy right now. You lived a full and important life contributing to the liberation of a nation by force and actual activism. You will never be forgotten.”
#DONALDTRUMP
When Donald Trump congratulated Vladimir Putin on his election win he offered the White House as a venue for a meeting, according to the Russian media. @Jenniferjacobs said: “A Kremlin aide told reporters that since Putin and Trump’s ‘constructive’ phone call, they haven’t had time to finalise invitation to the WH.” @jchaltiwanger said: “A meeting between the presidents of the US and Russia would be relatively normal in almost any other administration. But we live in strange, unsettling times.”
