Trump poised to pull troops out of Syria

- By MARGARET NEIGHBOUR

President Donald Trump said yesterday that a decision to pull US troops out of Syria could be made “very quickly”.

The US leader said that he wanted to bring them home to “start rebuilding our nation”.

Mr Trump also said that the primary mission for US troops in Syria was toppling the Islamic State group.

And he said that task was almost completed.

Mr Trump said the US had spent seven trillion US dollars (£5tn) in the Middle East over the years, adding that his country’s intervention had bought “nothing, except death and destruction”.

President Trump also said last week that the US would soon leave Syria.

However, other officials in the Trump administration have argued for keeping US troops in Syria in the interest of protecting and maintaining regional stability. Mr Trump made his remarks at a White House news conference with the presidents of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
