Tech guru Eileen Mclaren joins board of Cognitive Geology

- By SCOTT REID

Tech expert Eileen Mclaren, who played a part in the scaling of both Skyscanner and Fanduel into billion-dollar “unicorns”, has joined the board of Edinburgh-based start-up Cognitive Geology.

Mclaren joined Cognitive Geology as their vice-president of software engineer- ing in July 2017 and has now been promoted to chief operating officer and been made a director, gaining a seat on the company’s board.

Founded by geologist Luke Johnson in 2014, Cognitive Geology designs and builds specialist software for geoscientists in the oil and gas industries, improving accuracy in finding, appraising and developing oil and gas reserves. Last year, the firm secured £2 million from Maven Capital Partners and Enzo Ventures to develop its range of products for the oil and gas industry.

The geoscience software industry is estimated to be worth an annual $4.5 billion (£3.2bn) with that total predicted to double over the next few years as outdated software is replaced by “next generation” technology. Cognitive has already secured a seven-figure contract with one of the largest companies in the world.

Mclaren said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked at some of the most successful tech companies around and the planning, drive and the quality of the execution I see at Cognitive has the same hallmarks I saw in the early days at Skyscanner and Fanduel.”
