Ashcroft on target as battling Dunfermline lift chances of promotion play-off

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Lee Ashcroft struck early as Dunfermline boosted their promotion play-off prospects with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Livingston at East End Park.

Ashcroft notched the only goal after 11 minutes when he met Tom Beadling’s flick with a 14-yard shot high into the net.

Livingston produced a spirited response and home keeper Lee Robinson thwarted Ryan Hardie twice in quick succession as the Lions almost levelled before the break.

Dunfermline came under increasing pressure after the restart but Livi lacked the composure to convert chances into goals.

Queen of the South and Falkirk made each other’s thin hopes of a play-off place even thinner in their 2-2 draw at Palmerston.

The bairns took the lead after five minutes when Andrew Nelson curled a low shot home. An equaliser arrived six minutes into the second half, Joe Thomson thumping a loose ball into the net after a Dom Thomas corner.

The Dumfries men grabbed the next goal on 73 minutes, Darren Brownlie heading home a corner, but Falkirk drew level three minutes from time when Louis Longridge slipped the ball home.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle pulled further away from the relegation play-off place with a 4-0 win over a Brechin City side who have just five games left to secure a solitary victory.

Joe Chalmers fired Caley into an early lead and then turned provider for Coll Donaldson to rifle home from close range as Inverness extended their advantage before the break. It got worse for Brechin when Chalmers claimed his second on the hour before George Oakley made it four. ● The two Ladbrokes League 2 games that were called off before kick-off last night due to waterlogged pitches at Cowdenbeath and Berwick have been re-arranged.

Cowdenbeath will now host Montrose at Central Park next Tuesday, 10 April. The meeting at Shielfield between Berwick Rangers and Stenhousemuir, which has now been called off four times, is scheduled for Tuesday, 17 April.

Both games will kick off at 7:45pm.
