£10m up in smoke

-

I note with incredulity that ministers advise that £10 million is spent annually in “stopsmoking services” across Scotland (Scotsman , 4 April).

Whilst I accept that it assists the efficiency of the health providers in Scotland that people should be discouraged from smoking, surely this is a scandalous waste of resources in an area where the message will have been received by now or will not be received at all.

People can stop smoking if they really want to, all that is required is sufficient incentive.

Following treatment at the Beatson, my late father was advised that a return to smoking would kill him. He duly gave up a habit which he had enjoyed throughout his life and never smoked again.

This, for me, puts into perspective the moaning of those who claim that they would love to stop but are unable.

Let’s face it, smokers smoke because they enjoy it. Surely it’s time to stop throwing public money down the drain for something which, at the end of the day, is up to the choice of the individual.
