Universities and colleges told to improve safety

- By CATRIONA WEBSTER newsdeskts@scotsman.com

Homeowners aged 55 plus could benefit from releasing money locked up in their homes. Multi-award-winning equity release specialists Age Partnership can help homeowners decide if equity release is right for them, how much they can release and what impact it could have on the size of their estate including their entitlement to means-tested benefits now, or in the future. Any money released, plus accrued interest would be repaid upon death, or moving into long-term care. Equity Release may involve a home reversion plan or a lifetime mortgage which is secured against your property. To understand the features and risks, ask for your personalised illustration. We provide initial advice for free and without obligation. Only if you choose to proceed and your case completes would a fee of 1.95% of the amount released be payable (minimum £1,495). You only continue to own your own home with a lifetime mortgage. Universities and colleges have been urged to prioritise student safety and mental health in new guidance.

Higher education institutions have been told to review their policies for preventing violence against women on campus and ensure they have in place effective report- ing systems and support for victims.

Each institution will also be expected to develop a mental health strategy and to work with NUS Scotland to draw up a student mental health agreement.

The expectations were set out by further and higher education minister Shirleyanne Somerville in a letter to the Scottish Funding Council, which distributes £1.8 billion to universities and colleges.

She said: “As this letter makes clear, widening access to university for people from the most disadvantaged backgrounds remains our key priority and I am clear that progress must continue at pace. It with this in mind that I am putting equality and fairness at the heart of this year’s guidance to the sector.” 0 Shirley-anne Somerville: Student safety must be priority
