Protesters burn tyres as Gaza border row heats up

- By FARES AKRAM

Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces erupted along Gaza’s border with Israel, a week after similar unrest left 16 people dead.

Protesters burned car tyres and threw stones yesterday, demanding refugees be allowed to return to ancestral lands that are now in Israel.

Israelhasaccusedhamas of trying to carry out border attacks under the cover of large protests and said it would prevent a breach of the fence at all costs.

Yesterday’s march was the second in what Gaza’s Hamas rulers said would be several weeks of protests.

The Israeli military reported three people had been shot in the legs.

Israel’s defence minister has warned protesters approaching the border fence are endangering their lives.
