Ayesha Hazarika could hardly be more wrong – UK voters are NOT always right or left (Perspective, 11 April). As she herself recognises, it is the defective first-past-the-post voting system that makes UK voters appear to be so polarised. But she seems content to leave that as it is, distorting the voters’ wishes and corrupting the political process.

She recognises that there are quite deep divisions among the supporters of the Labour Party and among the supporters of the Conservative Party. The problem is the supporters of those parties – those who vote for them – have no say in which way they want their chosen party to go. We need a more sensitive voting system that would allow the voters to express their views through the candidates they support.

We need a parliament at Westminster that is properly representative of those who vote. We know how to do that. To say of the defective firstpast-the-post, “them’s the rules”, is just not good enough.
