Minister calls for a ‘robust approach’ to sheep-worrying

- By ANDREW ARBUCKLE

Scottish Rural Economy Secretary, Fergus Ewing has this week urged the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to take a “robust approach” to offences involving sheep worrying.

His move follows a spate of cases where heavily pregnant ewes have been attacked by dogs being allowed to run off the leash.

“Livestock worrying is a serious issue affecting the welfare of farm animals and the livelihood of farmers.

“Dog owners who walk, or keep, dogs in and around farmland should act responsibly at all times when exercising their animals in the countryside and always be mindful that there may be grazing livestock nearby.”

While that advice was relevant 12 months of the year, Ewing stressed it was particularly important at this time of year with the spring lambing season under way.

“The Scottish Government commends the efforts of Police Scotland to tackle this issue, and the ongoing commitment from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to take a robust approach to prosecuting offences.

“While the reduction in reported incidents of sheep worrying is to be welcomed, I would encourage farmers to continue to report all incidents.”
