Wind farm threat

-

All credit to our MP, Douglas Ross, and a vigilant Speyside sporting company, for raising concerns about windfarm saturation in Moray. Despite an astonishing 640 objections, from a sparsely populated area, and the truly heroic fight by one of Scotland’s most prestigious whisky distilleries, it is heartbreaking to hear that the giant, environmentally destructive Dorenell wind farm is set to go ahead in our Cabrach.

Glenfiddich, “valley of the deer”, will become valley of the turbines. I often climb Ben Rinnes, the jewel in the crown of beautiful, historic Banffshire. It is now virtually impossible to take a photo in any direction without including an unsightly wind farm, and Dorenell will add enormously to this visual blight.

This is supposed to be an internationally important tourist area, malt whisky country, home to the scenic Speyside way, and yet the increasingly remote Scottish Government are actively promoting its destruction!

A concerned German tourist I met on the hill recently asked me “How can you Scots allow this to happen?” Bitter experience from Germany also shows that as a result of the rash and hasty expansion of renewable energy from wind power, the populations of almost 50 per cent of all bird species have significantly decreased. Dorenell wind farm will destroy prime nesting sites of the charming snow bunting, and even rarer dotterel. GEORGE HERRAGHTY
